Understanding Matches
Review, confirm, or dismiss a match
Check a possible match and record your decision.

When we find a possible match, it waits for you in Matches to Review. You decide whether it's the right person.
Review a match
- In the sidebar, select Matches to Review. The badge shows how many are waiting.
- On the left, select the person you're watching (callout 1), then the possible match under it (callout 2). Each one shows the date of death, the place, the funeral home or newspaper, and the score.
- Read the Match evidence. The table compares your watch with the obituary, fact by fact.
- Select Open original (callout 5) to read the obituary on the funeral home's or newspaper's site. Please always do this before you decide.
Confirm it's the right person
Select Confirm (callout 3). When you confirm:
- The match moves to Confirmed Matches.
- The watch is completed and stops monitoring. Its slot is freed for someone else.
- Any other open matches for that watch are dismissed.
On Professional plans with a connected practice-management system and death alerts turned on, the note on the linked matter or case is added when we alert you about the match, not when you confirm it.
Dismiss it
Select Not a match (callout 4) if it's someone else. When you dismiss:
- The match is removed from your review list.
- The watch keeps monitoring. We'll keep looking for the right obituary.
- Your answer helps us improve future matching.
After you confirm
Open Confirmed Matches to see the record. From there you can export it (see Create a PDF audit report) or review the Decision history.
If you confirmed a match by mistake, open it from Confirmed Matches and select Reopen decision. Confirm in the dialog. The match goes back to Matches to Review, so you can confirm it or dismiss it again. Reopening does not change the family members already taken from the obituary.
Confirming the match completed the watch and stopped monitoring. Reopen decision does not turn monitoring back on. Email support@obituarymonitor.com if you need that person watched again.
